Using lenses of both long and short focal distance, I photographed the animals, insects, lichens, mushrooms, and bacteria to capture all of the new phenomena that appeared before me, recording photographically what my mind and body experienced at each passing moment. I then created a map of the forest, tracing those fragments of my own memory.

This piece explores the process of rambling around a forest with no path or waypoint, the fear of losing one's sense of direction and not knowing which direction to proceed, and feelings of safety experienced upon hearing sounds like the running of a river or finding beaver and deer footprints, signals that served to reposition and reorient me. Furthermore, by exploring the difference in my very viewpoint towards nature, informed as it has been by life in cities, I attempted to explore anew our relationship with these domains.

I attempted photographing within the range of motion afforded me as a person in the forest, from eye-level down to the ground, and I found that the space hardly differed spatially from the large spaces I am used to in cities. It felt as if many layers of the natural world were spreading out before me, an experience that was a new and vital discovery.

この作品は、道なき森を目的なく彷徨いながら歩くということであったり 右に行くのか左に行くのかさえ分からない森の中で方向感覚を失うことの恐ろしさ、 その一方で流れる川の音やビーバーや鹿などの動物の足跡よって常に自分の位置を知る事が出来る事に対する安心感、そしてこれまで都市をベースに作品制作を行ってきた私自身が自然に向き合った時の視点や体感の違いなどを通じて、都市と自然の関わりを考察した新たな試みである。

森の中では、人間の目の高さから地面までの距離で、可動できる範囲での撮影を試みたが、 自然の中では都市で感じる際の大きな空間認識と変わらず、むしろそれよりもより大きな自然界の何層にも重なるレイヤーが、宇宙のように拡がっているように感じれたことは自身にとっても大きな発見であった。
